Vitamin D Deficiency Causes

Vitamin D Deficiency Causes many health problems in adults as well as children. One of the most necessary fat-soluble vitamins is vitamin D. It is otherwise known as cholecalciferol or ergocalciferol. Our body primarily derives this vitamin from sunlight and other food resources.

Vitamin D is an essential element to facilitate the growth of bones, teeth, and nails. However, some people lack to intake or synthesize enough vitamin D in the body, which gives rise to a situation called vitamin D deficiency. Here are some possible causes behind this deficiency

1. Deficiency in Diet

Though food is not the primary source of vitamin D; however, a sound human body derives 40 percent of vitamin D from food sources. Health experts usually recommend fish-eating habits to vegans as they lack it in their diet. Therefore, they are more prone to vitamin D deficiency. If you do not want to switch to non-vegan, you can consume mushroom, cereal, oatmeal, orange, and cow’s milk for maintaining an adequate level of this vitamin. 2. Intestinal Malabsorption

Even if you are taking enough vitamin D from diet and sunlight exposure, if you still suffer from a deficiency, this might be the possible cause. People who have bowel diseases such as cystic fibrosis, IBD, Crohn’s disease, small bowel syndrome, and who have undergone intestinal surgeries cannot readily absorb vitamin D. However, certain foods like seeds, nuts, dairy products, eggs, and avocado are useful in this concern.

3. Lack of exposure to the Primary Source

If you do not have enough exposure to sunlight, then there are maximum chances of suffering from vitamin D deficiency. In the presence of enough sunlight, the skin synthesizes vitamin D3 by enzymatic reactions under the influence of UVB radiation.

4. Lack of Conversion into an Active Form

The liver and kidney play a significant role in the conversion of vitamin D to its active form known as calcifediol and calcitriol respectively. After the formation of calcitriol, it circulates to blood and reaches bones, nails, and teeth for maintaining their integrity. It is also helpful for maintaining calcium-phosphorus balance in the body.

5. Drug Interactions

Here is a list of few drugs that interfere with vitamin D metabolism to decrease its level-

  • Steroids drugs
  • Anti-seizure drugs
  • Anti-tuberculosis drugs
  • Weight loss drugs
